Scholarships for Pilot Training in Australia
What International and Australian Students Need to Know
One of the questions we frequently receive from prospective students is:
“Are there scholarships available for pilot training in Australia?”
The answer is important to understand before you begin planning your training.
Australian National Airline College does not offer scholarships for pilot training.
There are currently no scholarships offered by ANAC for either international students or Australian students undertaking our pilot training programs.
Similarly, prospective international students should not assume that they can arrange a student loan or other pilot training finance through an Australian bank or finance provider.
For international students, finance for pilot training generally needs to be arranged in their home country, before they come to Australia.
Are There Scholarships for International Students?
There are sometimes aviation scholarships, sponsorship programs or government-funded training opportunities available in individual countries.
However, these are generally not scholarships provided by Australian flight schools.
If you are an international student hoping to have your pilot training funded through a scholarship or sponsorship, you should investigate opportunities in your own country.
Potential sources may include:
- Airlines
- Aviation companies
- Government agencies
- Military or defence organisations
- Banks and financial institutions
- Educational foundations
- Private companies
- Family businesses
- Industry organisations
The availability of these opportunities varies significantly from country to country.
You should therefore research the organisations in your own country that provide funding for aviation or professional education.
Can ANAC Help Me Find a Scholarship?
Unfortunately, we cannot arrange or provide scholarships for students.
We can provide information about our courses and explain the training pathway, but we don’t operate a scholarship program and cannot apply to scholarship providers on behalf of students.
If you complete an application we can provide a Letter of Offer which requires no payment unless you are successful in arranging your scholarship. This Letter of Offer is usually needed by sponsors so that they understand that you do have a place to train and so they can understand the costs and training involved
What About Sponsorship?
There is an important distinction between a scholarship and sponsorship.
A scholarship may be awarded by an educational institution, government organisation or other body to help fund a student’s education.
Sponsorship can involve an airline, company, government organisation or other organisation agreeing to fund a student’s training, potentially in return for an employment commitment or other arrangement.
ANAC is happy to train students who have secured sponsorship from an appropriate organisation.
However, the sponsorship application and selection process is the responsibility of the student and the sponsoring organisation.
We cannot arrange sponsorship for you.
Can an Airline Sponsor My Pilot Training?
Airline-sponsored pilot training programs do exist in some countries and from time to time airlines may recruit students through cadet or sponsored pilot programs.
However, these opportunities are highly specific to the airline and country.
If you’re interested in airline sponsorship, you should contact airlines directly or investigate their cadet pilot and sponsored training programs.
Don’t assume that enrolling at an Australian flight school automatically makes you eligible for airline sponsorship.
You need to secure the sponsorship independently.
If you are successful, ANAC can then discuss providing your training.
Can I Get a Bank Loan in Australia to Pay for Pilot Training?
For international students, this is generally not a realistic option.
Australian banks and lenders typically require appropriate security or collateral and evidence of the borrower’s financial circumstances.
An international student who is living temporarily in Australia generally won’t have Australian property or other suitable Australian assets that can be offered as security for a substantial pilot training loan.
As a result, international students should not plan on obtaining a large Australian bank loan to fund their pilot training.
Why Can’t an International Student Simply Borrow the Money?
Pilot training is a significant financial commitment.
A lender providing a substantial loan wants to know that it has adequate security and a reliable means of recovering the money if the borrower cannot repay the loan.
For an international student, there can be additional difficulties because:
- You may not be an Australian permanent resident or citizen.
- You may not have Australian property.
- You may have limited Australian credit history.
- Your future income may be earned outside Australia.
- You may return to your home country after completing your studies.
For these reasons, prospective international students should arrange their funding before travelling to Australia rather than relying on Australian finance.
What Are the Main Ways International Students Fund Pilot Training?
For most international students, funding will come from one or more of the following:
Family Funding
Parents or other family members may provide the funds required for tuition and living expenses.
This is a common way international students finance professional education.
Bank or Education Loan in Your Home Country
Some countries have banks or specialist lenders that provide education loans for students studying overseas.
If you require a loan, investigate the options available in your own country.
The lender may require:
- Property or other collateral
- A guarantor
- Evidence of family income
- Evidence of assets
- A strong credit history
- Other financial documentation
The requirements vary between countries and lenders.
Scholarship
If scholarships are available in your country, you can apply directly to the relevant organisation.
Sponsorship
An airline, government organisation or company may potentially sponsor your training.
Combination of Funding Sources
Some students may use a combination of family funds, savings, loans and other financial support.
Don’t Leave Your Funding Until the Last Minute
Financial planning should be one of the first things you consider when deciding to become a pilot.
Pilot training is a substantial investment, and you need to have sufficient funds available not only for the course itself but also for your living expenses in Australia.
Before committing to training, you should understand the total financial requirement.
This includes:
- Course fees
- Any costs excluded from the course
- Accommodation
- Food
- Transport
- Health insurance
- Personal expenses
- Travel
- Other living costs
You should also have an appropriate financial contingency.
Student Visa Financial Requirements
International students also need to consider the financial requirements associated with their Australian student visa.
When applying for a Student visa (subclass 500), you may need to demonstrate that you have sufficient funds to support yourself during your studies, including applicable course fees and living and travel costs.
This means that having a realistic financial plan isn’t simply a matter of being able to afford the course.
You need to be able to demonstrate that you can support yourself while studying in Australia.
For current visa requirements and evidence requirements, students should always refer to the Australian Department of Home Affairs.
What If I Find a Scholarship After Applying to ANAC?
If you are successful in obtaining a scholarship or sponsorship after you’ve been in contact with ANAC, that’s excellent.
We are happy to discuss providing your training subject to the normal entry requirements and availability of places.
However, the scholarship or sponsorship provider will need to arrange the funding directly with you and meet whatever conditions apply to the sponsorship.
ANAC’s role is to provide the aviation training.
We don’t administer or arrange the scholarship.
What If My Government Wants to Sponsor Me?
This is different again.
Some governments, government departments and other organisations may sponsor students to undertake professional training overseas.
If you have been selected for government-sponsored training and the sponsoring organisation wishes to send you to ANAC, we are happy to discuss the training arrangements.
We can provide the information required by the sponsoring organisation regarding:
- Course structure
- Course duration
- Fees
- Entry requirements
- Training facilities
- Other relevant course information
The sponsoring organisation remains responsible for the sponsorship and funding arrangements.
There Are No ANAC Scholarships, So What Should You Do?
If you’re hoping to have your pilot training funded, don’t spend months searching Australian flight schools for scholarships that don’t exist.
Instead, start with your home country.
Research:
Airline cadet programs
Government sponsorship programs
Aviation scholarships
Education scholarships
Bank education loans
Specialist aviation finance
Corporate sponsorship
Family funding
The organisation providing the funding will determine its own eligibility criteria and application process.
A Word of Caution About “Pilot Scholarships”
Be careful when searching online for pilot training scholarships.
You may find websites advertising:
- Fully funded pilot training
- Guaranteed airline sponsorship
- Free commercial pilot training
- “100% scholarships”
- Guaranteed airline jobs
Don’t assume that these offers are genuine simply because they appear online.
Before paying an application fee or providing personal or financial information, investigate:
- Who is providing the funding?
- Is the organisation legitimate?
- What exactly does the scholarship cover?
- Are there conditions attached?
- Is the training actually fully funded?
- Does the program guarantee employment?
- What qualifications are required?
- Is the organisation connected to an actual airline or training organisation?
If something sounds too good to be true, investigate it carefully.
The Bottom Line
The situation is actually quite straightforward.
Does ANAC offer pilot training scholarships?
No.
Are scholarships available from ANAC for international students?
No.
Are scholarships available from ANAC for Australian students?
No.
Can international students normally obtain substantial pilot training finance from an Australian bank?
They should not rely on this as a funding option.
International students generally need to arrange their funding in their home country, particularly where security or collateral is required.
Can ANAC train sponsored students?
Yes.
If you independently secure sponsorship from an airline, government organisation, company or other legitimate sponsor, ANAC is happy to discuss providing the training, subject to normal admission requirements and availability.
Can ANAC find a sponsor for me?
No.
The student is responsible for finding and applying for scholarships or sponsorships.
Plan Your Pilot Training Funding Before You Apply
If you’re serious about becoming a professional pilot, financing your training should be one of the first parts of your planning process.
Don’t assume that you will be able to find a scholarship after you arrive in Australia.
Don’t assume that an Australian bank will provide you with a large unsecured loan.
And don’t rely on a scholarship or sponsorship that you haven’t actually been awarded.
Instead:
Determine the total cost of your training.
Work out how much you will need for living expenses.
Investigate scholarships and sponsorships in your own country.
Investigate education loans available in your home country.
Establish how your family or other financial supporters will fund the training.
Make sure you have sufficient funds before committing to the course.
This will give you the financial certainty you need to concentrate on your training once you arrive in Australia.
