Can International Students Become Pilots in Australia?

Yes. International students can undertake professional pilot training in Australia and qualify as pilots. But studying in Australia on a Student visa does not automatically give you the right to remain in Australia and work as a pilot after you graduate.

This is an important distinction for anyone considering flight training in Australia.

Can I study pilot training in Australia as an international student?

Yes. Australia has a well-established aviation training industry and international students can enrol in approved aviation courses with Australian education providers.

For an international student, the first step is obtaining an Australian Student visa (subclass 500). The Student visa is a temporary visa for study, and studying must be the primary reason for applying for the visa.

This means your purpose in coming to Australia should genuinely be to undertake your aviation training.

What is the Genuine Student requirement?

When applying for a Student visa, you must satisfy Australia’s Genuine Student (GS) requirement.

The Department of Home Affairs assesses whether you are a genuine applicant for entry and stay as a student and whether studying in Australia is your primary reason for applying for the visa.

You will be asked questions about matters including:

  • Your current circumstances and ties to your home country
  • Why you want to study your chosen course in Australia
  • Why you have chosen your particular education provider
  • How the course will benefit your future
  • Other relevant information about your circumstances

Each main GS response has a maximum of 150 words. Supporting evidence is also important.

Why is this important for future pilots?

If your genuine intention is to come to Australia to undertake pilot training and then use your qualifications to build your aviation career, you should be able to clearly explain this.

For example, you might intend to return to your home country after completing your training and seek employment there as a commercial pilot.

You should not present a Student visa application as simply a way of getting into Australia so that you can remain permanently.

At the same time, Australian immigration rules recognise that a genuine student may, after completing their studies, become eligible for another visa and potentially pursue further opportunities in Australia. The Department specifically states that future intentions to seek permanent residence do not, by themselves, count against an applicant under the Genuine Student requirement.

The important distinction is that your intention when applying for the Student visa must be genuine study.

Can I stay in Australia after completing my pilot training?

Possibly, but there is no automatic right to stay in Australia simply because you have completed pilot training.

Your Student visa is temporary. If you want to remain in Australia after your Student visa ends, you must have another visa that allows you to stay. The Department of Home Affairs states that if you want to stay longer without continuing your studies, you need to apply for another visa for which you are eligible.

There are a number of possible visa pathways depending on an individual’s qualifications, age, occupation, work experience, employer, location and personal circumstances.

These can include certain graduate, skilled, employer-sponsored, regional and other visa pathways.

However, there is no guarantee that a particular graduate will qualify for any particular visa.

Australia’s migration system is complex and visa rules can change. Eligibility also depends on the individual circumstances of each applicant.

For this reason, Moorabbin Aviation Services cannot provide immigration or visa advice. Students who want to investigate options for remaining in Australia after graduation should obtain professional advice from a suitably qualified Australian migration professional.

Can I get a job with an Australian airline after completing my training?

This is another important point for international students to understand.

Completing your pilot training in Australia does not mean that you will graduate and go directly into an Australian airline job.

The normal career progression for a newly qualified commercial pilot involves building flying experience.

A graduate may, depending on their qualifications, licences and employment opportunities, initially work in general aviation in roles such as:

  • Flight instructor
  • Charter pilot
  • Scenic flight pilot
  • Survey or aerial work pilot
  • Other entry-level commercial aviation roles

The purpose is to build the flying experience, operational knowledge and experience required to progress towards larger commercial operators and eventually airline employment.

This applies to Australian students as well as international students.

What about staying in Australia and working as a pilot?

Some international graduates have successfully remained in Australia after completing their studies by obtaining another visa that allowed them to work.

However, this should be viewed as a possible pathway, not an expected outcome or a guarantee.

Australia has several skilled and employer-sponsored visa programs, but eligibility depends on the visa requirements in force at the time and the graduate’s individual circumstances. For example, some skilled and employer-sponsored visas require particular occupations, qualifications, work experience, sponsorship or other criteria.

Graduate visa options also have specific eligibility requirements. For example, the Temporary Graduate visa includes different streams depending on the type of Australian qualification completed, and the Post-Vocational Education Work stream has specific requirements concerning the qualification and nominated occupation.

Because these rules can change, students should check the current requirements at the time they graduate and obtain professional migration advice before making important decisions.

A realistic approach to an aviation career

If you are considering Australia for pilot training, it is useful to think about your career in two stages.

Stage 1 — Come to Australia to study

Your immediate objective is to:

Study → Complete your aviation qualifications → Become a commercially qualified pilot

Your Student visa application needs to demonstrate that you are a genuine student and that studying is the primary reason you are coming to Australia.

Stage 2 — Build your professional flying career

After completing your training, you can consider the employment and visa options available to you at that time.

You may return to your home country and begin your flying career there.

Alternatively, if you are eligible for another Australian visa, you may be able to remain in Australia and seek aviation employment.

If you remain in Australia, however, you should generally expect to build your professional flying experience before applying for airline positions, rather than expecting direct entry into an airline immediately after completing your initial training.

So, can international students become pilots in Australia?

Absolutely.

International students can undertake professional pilot training in Australia and build the qualifications needed for a commercial aviation career.

The important thing to understand is that there are two separate questions:

  1. Can I come to Australia to study pilot training?
Yes, if you meet the requirements for an Australian Student visa and are accepted into an eligible course.
  2. Can I stay in Australia and work as a pilot after I graduate?
Possibly, but only if you qualify for another visa that gives you the right to remain and work in Australia.

There is no automatic right to remain simply because you have completed your pilot training.

For students considering Australia, the best approach is to focus first on becoming a qualified professional pilot and making sure your Student visa application genuinely reflects your study intentions. After graduation, you can assess the visa and employment opportunities available to you at that time.

Important: Australian visa and migration requirements can change. The information above is general information only and is not immigration or legal advice. Moorabbin Aviation Services does not provide professional migration advice. Students who require advice about their individual visa circumstances should consult an appropriately qualified Australian migration professional.
